Before Reading

Set a Purpose

Do a quickwrite about the things you value. As you read, think about what the speaker of each poem values.

During Reading

Read with Purpose in Mind

1. Listen as your teacher reads aloud “Forgotten Language.” What does the speaker miss or no longer know? Go back and read the poem on your own. What can you tell about the speaker’s values from the poem?

2. Read “Hector the Collector” on your own. Read it more than once if necessary. Make notes about what Hector values and what other people think of him.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud

Working with a partner, take turns reading the poems aloud. As you read and listen, pay attention to the rhyme, alliteration, and assonance in the poems.

After Reading

Reflect on Your Purpose

With a partner, discuss the notes you took about the two poems. Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting theme and tones of the poems.
