In your notebook, make a triangular-shaped mood chart like the Graphic Organizer on page 645. As you read, you will add words and phrases that support each mood.
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first two lines of the poem. What mood do these lines create? What words or phrases help create this mood? Write them in the chart.
2. Continue reading the poem on your own. Stop after each stanza to identify the mood and the words or phrases that help create the mood.
If you have trouble following this poem, read About the Author on page 648. The poet explains how she came to write “The Lost Parrot.” Keep this background in mind as you go back and read the poem.
With a partner, review the notes you took in your mood chart. Write a paragraph summarizing the mood of the poem.
