Review the definition of image on page 669 in your textbook. Haiku generally present a single, concise image. As you read, visualize the images created by each poem.
1. Close your eyes and listen as your teacher reads aloud the first haiku. What do you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell? Jot down sensory details that come to mind when you hear the haiku. How does this image make you feel?
2. Read the other two haiku on your own. Read one and create a mind picture. Jot down details from your mind picture. Then follow the same process for the next haiku.
The language in haiku is usually simple, but the imagery is often complex. Work with a partner to do a read and think aloud. Read aloud one haiku. Stop and think aloud with your partner about the central image in the poem. Then have your partner read the next haiku. Again, stop to think aloud. Do the same for the last haiku.
Summarize your mind pictures and share your summary with a partner. Do you have similar reactions to the poems?
