Think about what you know so far in the play. How does Annie feel about Helen? How do you think Annie will reach Helen? How do you think they will get along? Write a prediction in your notebook.
1. Read the stage directions at the beginning of Act 2 on page 717. Listen as your teacher reads Annie’s opening interaction with Helen. Read along to see what Helen is doing as Annie speaks. Make a prediction about what will happen next. Write down your new predictions in your notebook.
2. Read the rest of the act on your own. Stop occasionally to assess your predictions, to make new predictions, and to write them in your notebook.
If you encounter unfamiliar words as you read, write them in your word study notebook. Use context clues to help you figure out the meaning. If that doesn’t work, try to use word parts, like prefixes and word roots, to help you figure out the meaning. Use a dictionary if you are still unsure of the meaning. Write the definition in your word study notebook. When you have finished reading the selection, practice using your new words in contextual sentences.
Go through your list of predictions. Put a star next to every prediction that you were right about. Put a check next to every prediction where you changed your ideas from a previous prediction. Share your predictions with a partner. Talk about what clues in the play led you to make the predictions.
