Before Reading

Make a Plan

Using sticky flags or small sticky notes, you will code this act in one of three ways: text-self, text-text, and text-world. As you read, you will mark places in the text where you are reminded of events in your own life (text-self), places that remind you of other stories (text-text), or places where you are reminded about what you know about the world (text-world).

During Reading

Code the Text

1. Begin reading Act 3 on page 735. Stop and add flags as you make connections. Jot a quick note on a flag to show the connection. For example, you might stick a text-self flag to the first few lines of the act and write, “Learning to write.” Don’t worry about using the same number of notes for each of the three ways of coding.

2. Keep reading the rest of the act. Pause frequently to add flags and notes where you make connections.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you are having trouble connecting to the selection, try using the Guided Reading Questions. These questions will help you focus on the main ideas of the selection. As you encounter a Guided Reading Question, stop and read the question. Then read the lines around the question to find the answer.

After Reading

Reflect on Your Coding

How did connecting your life to the text help your reading? How did connecting the text to another text help your reading? How did connecting the text to what you know about the world help your reading? Discuss these questions with a partner.
