Look at the time line on page 769 of your textbook. This is one way of organizing information. Another way is outlining. Choose one of these methods to organize information as you read.
1. Listen as your teacher reads aloud the first page of the selection. What details do you learn about Elizabeth? Write them in your outline or time line.
2. Continue reading on your own. Keep adding details about Elizabeth and her life to your outline or time line.
Before reading the selection, preview Words for Everyday Use. Read each word, definition, and contextual sentence carefully. Write your own contextual sentence for each word. Then preview the footnotes. Read each word or phrase and its explanation. As you read, refer back to the footnotes to refresh your understanding of the words. Use context clues to determine the meaning of any other unfamiliar word. If you cannot understand the word using context clues, consult a dictionary.
With a partner, compare the notes you took while reading. How did the method you chose affect what you wrote down?
