During Reading

Write Down Topic and Details

1. Notice that this selection is not divided into sections with titles. Writing suggested titles of sections will be your task. The sections may only be a page or so in length; again, you will decide when one section ends and another begins.

2. Read the first page and decide where the first section might end. Give this first section a title based on the topic, and write down two or three important details. Continue in this way throughout the selection

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud/Think Aloud

If you are having trouble completing the chart, work with a partner to do a read and think aloud. Read two or three paragraphs aloud. Stop and think aloud with your partner about the section you read. Identify the main idea of the section and share your response to what you read. Then have your partner read the next two or three paragraphs. Again, stop to think aloud. Continue in this way until you have completed the selection.
