Expressive Writing. A writer’s aim is his or her purpose, or goal, in a given piece of writing. In expressive writing, a writer’s aim is to reflect on an experience, an issue, or an emotion. What does the author of “The Price of Freedom” reflect on? What points does she want to get across to the reader?

Unity. Unity in a piece of writing is the use of details related to the main idea, or theme. An essay with unity is one in which all the parts help to support the thesis statement, or main idea. What is the main idea in “The Price of Freedom”? In what ways do the other parts of the essay support the main idea? You may want to use a graphic organizer like the one shown below to examine how each paragraph relates to the main idea.

History Connection. In 1998, the National Prisoners of War Museum opened in Andersonville, Georgia. The museum is located at the Andersonville National Historic Site, a former Confederate Civil War prison for Union soldiers. In 1970 the U.S. Congress designated the site a memorial for all American prisoners of war (POWs). POWs and other groups began raising the millions of dollars needed to build a museum there. The museum is a tribute to all POWs, from the American Revolution (1775–1783) to the Persian Gulf War (1991).

• An estimated 800,000 American men and women have been held prisoners of war throughout U.S. history. However, by the time the museum opened in 1998 to commemorate their heroism, most of these POWs—many from the Civil War and the World Wars of the early 20th century—had passed away from old age. Only 56,000 POWs remained to hear of the tribute to them. The table on page 813 shows how many POWs were imprisoned during each war and how many died in captivity.
