Prepare a KWL Chart
In your notebook, make a 3-column chart by dividing a page into three equal columns. Label the left column KNOW; label the middle column WANT TO KNOW; label the right-hand column LEARNED. Before you read, write down what you know about body temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure. Write your notes in the KNOW column.
Make Notes
1. As you study the chart, make a few notes in the LEARNED column about what you learned about body temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure.
2. What other questions do you have about body temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure? Write these in the WANT TO KNOW column.
Fix-Up Idea: Refocus
You may find the chart easier to read if you are looking for specific information. Reread the chart looking for answers to the Critical Thinking questions on page 831.
Reflect on Your Chart
How did keeping a KWL chart help your reading? How could you find answers to the questions in the WANT TO KNOW column?
