Like a writer, a photographer has an aim. Read about aim in the Reader’s Toolbox on page 837 of your textbook. As you look at the photographs, think about Rothstein’s aim and the effect of the photographs on you, the viewer.
1. Look at the first photograph. What do you think the photographer’s aim is? What effect does it have on you? Jot down your thoughts.
2. Look at the other two photographs. Again, try to determine Rothstein’s aim and write down your ideas.
Examine the caption of each photograph. How does looking at the caption help you understand the photograph?
Which of the photographs do you find most effective in achieving the photographer’s purpose? Why? Discuss these questions with a partner.
