From the title of this piece, you know that this is a “how-to” piece. The purpose of reading is to learn how to chop an onion.

2. Read the next three steps. After each step, pause and think about whether you understand what you are supposed to do. If not, reread the step.

Fix-Up Idea: Visualize

Think about peeling, chopping, smelling, and eating onions. Try to imagine what you feel and smell, and whether your eyes water. As you read the selection, keep a picture in your mind of the scene. Try to imagine the sounds, the smells, the sights, and the things you touch.
