Understanding Literature

Character and Characterization. Look back to your graphic organizer with examples of the three types of characterization. Add a fourth column to your chart, and label it "What Is Revealed About the Character." Next to each example from the story, write what that example reveals about the character described. Review the story and consider which technique Potok relies on most to develop the characters of Moon, Ashraf, Mr. Vinten, and Mrs. Vinten. In a short paragraph or two, summarize your thoughts on Potok's use of one of the methods of characterization and how effective it is in developing a particular character in the story.

Image and Imagery. Explain the imagery used to characterize Moon and that used to characterize Ashraf.

Writer's Journal

1. Write a petition to the government of Pakistan, voicing your concern for child laborers and requesting changes to the system that forces them to work under substandard conditions.

2. Write the lyrics to a song that Moon's band might record in honor of Ashraf.

3. Imagine that you are Mrs. Woolsten, Moon's English teacher, and develop a writing assignment for the class to do on the day of the memorial school assembly.
