Before Reading

Draw a Cluster Chart

Draw a cluster chart and write “Born Worker” in the center circle. With a partner, list qualities of a “born worker” in the outlying circles.

During Reading

Find José’s Attributes

1. Follow along in your textbook as your teacher reads the first page of the story aloud. Then, with your partner, draw another cluster chart for José. In the outlying circles, add qualities about José that are described on the first page.

2. Continue reading the rest of the story with your partner. Stop periodically to add attributes to José’s chart. Construct a chart for Arnie, and add qualities that describe him.

Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud

If you are having trouble identifying information to add to the charts, have your partner read a short section aloud as you listen for information about the characters. Then, discuss this information with your partner, and list the most important information to your charts. Take turns reading aloud with your partner, and continue adding important information to your charts.

After Reading

Share Your Findings

Discuss your charts with your partner and add any additional information you feel necessary. Compare Arnie’s and José’s charts with your “Born Worker” chart. Identify the qualities that appear in two or more charts. Is José a born worker? Why, or why not?
