
Mood. Mood, or atmosphere, is the feeling or emotion the writer creates in a literary work. By working carefully with descriptive language, the writer can evoke in the reader an emotional response such as fear, discomfort, longing, or anticipation. As you read this short story, think about the mood the author has developed.

- World History Connection. On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese armed forces bombed Pearl Harbor, the hub of U.S. naval power on Oahu Island in Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The attack left the United States with 3,700 casualties and destroyed or damaged 21 naval ships and 300 aircraft. This event forced the United States into World War II.
- This bombing of Pearl Harbor led officials in the U.S. government to target as enemies all people of Japanese descent living on the Pacific coast of the United States. The U.S. Congress passed a law in 1942 that required persons of Japanese ancestryeven those who were U.S. citizensto move to relocation camps.
- Forced from their homes to live in these unpleasant camps, Japanese Americans were no longer free citizens, but prisoners of war. About 120,000 people were confined in camps for several years. When released, many people found their homes and possessions had been stolen or destroyed.
