Understanding Literature

Captions and Labels. What type of information is given in the captions of this selection? How does the information in the captions differ from the information in the labels? Evaluate the effectiveness of the visual style used in this selection. What can you learn when information is presented in this way that you would not learn from reading text alone? Why do you think the author chose this style? Would people who have not seen the movie Star Wars Episode 1 be able to understand the text, or would they need more information? Explain.

Science Fiction. What details in the selection are based on science or technology? Do the scientific descriptions seem authentic or do they seem improbable? Explain. In your opinion, which of these technologies might be available in the near future? Which details show that Star Wars is set in a world other than our own? Do you think this is a world set in the future, or is it another world entirely? Explain.

Writer's Journal

1. If you have seen any of the Star Wars movies, write a movie review about one of them. Remember to include the full title of the movie, the year it was released, and the names of the stars and the roles they play in the movie. Give your opinion of the movie, but be sure to back it up with details.

2. On your own paper, write a visual dictionary entry for a tool or device that has not been invented yet, as far as you know. This tool could be something similar to the A99 Aquata Breather or the hyperdrive generator. On your own paper, draw a diagram of the tool, then use captions to point out and name each of its parts. Include a paragraph describing what the device does.

3. Imagine that you are Qui-Gon Jinn. Write the lecture that Qui-Gon might give Obi-Wan when instructing him on the way of the Jedi in battle.
