about the author

Arthur Porges was born in Chicago in 1915. His short science fiction stories often contain elements of mathematics and science, along with chilling plot twists and menacing endings. Porges, who taught mathematics for many years, began publishing his stories in 1950.

While the characters in many of Porges's science fiction tales are not developed in great detail, the plots are usually very involved, containing elements of technology, human nature, irony, and humor. Porges's stories, published in such magazines as Galaxy, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Fantastic Stories of Imagination, have spanned half a century. Although his work continues to be seen in new publications, even his earliest stories remain exciting.
