about the author

Andy Charlie is a Yup'ik elder in the village of Tununak, Alaska. His Yup'ik name is Uyuraurluq. He narrated this traditional story in the Tununak Catholic Church on March 14, 1994. It was his first time as a storyteller in this group of traditional Yup'ik elders who had been gathering every week after Mass to tell stories to a group of elderly, middle-aged, and younger people. Andy Charlie called the story a quliraq and defined quliraq as "fiction," "fairy tale," or the kind of story where anything can happen. He also views quliraq and other stories as important tools for teaching, as evidenced when, while telling the story, he points out the lesson or moral.
