Read the Prereading information on page 435, as well as The Aztecs section on page 444. Discuss what you learn about the Aztecs. Then, draw a three-column prediction chart. Label the columns Clues, Predictions, Adjustments. Jot down the clues you gathered from the Prereading page in the first column. Form a prediction about the contents of the legend based on these clues. After reading, you will revisit this prediction to adjust or verify it.
1. Follow along in the text as your teacher reads the first page aloud. In the first column of your chart, record any clues you gather from the text. Use these clues to form a prediction about events to come. Revisit the prediction you made in the Before Reading activity. Do you have enough information to adjust or verify your prediction? If so, take the time to do so now.
2. Continue reading the selection on your own. Stop at least five times to make and adjust or verify your predictions. Remember to record pertinent clues in the first column of your chart to help you form your predictions.
If you have difficulty applying the reading strategy, work with a partner and take turns reading aloud. You might preview the text and set specific stopping points to make and adjust or verify predictions, as well as change readers. Work with your partner to identify the main ideas and clues in the section, and then discuss the predictions you can make based on these clues.
After finishing the story, go back and adjust or verify all of your predictions. Share your completed prediction chart with a small group. Compare and contrast your charts and consider how you came to the predictions you did.
