Because the selection is so long, it will be beneficial for you to record information as you read. The novel is divided into six chapters. Set aside a page for each chapter in your notebook, designating the pages by chapter number. For each page, include the following headings: Major Characters, Main Events, Important Symbols, Conflict, Reactions. As you read each chapter, you can jot down notes under their appropriate headings.
1. Follow along in the text as your teacher reads aloud the first chapter. Work with the class to fill in your chart for Chapter 1. Identify the main characters and the main conflicts. Record important events from this section of the text, and identify any symbols you encounter. Finally, record your reactions to the story so far.
2. Read through the end of Chapter 3 on your own. Stop at the end of each chapter to fill in your chart. Then, look over the Investigate, Inquire, and Imagine questions on page 536. Did you cover most of these points in your chart? If not, revisit your charts making the necessary additions. Discuss with the class any difficulties you have encountered or any parts of the story you found particularly interesting.
3. Read the remainder of the text on your own, stopping at the end of each chapter to fill in your charts. Take time to review your charts for each chapter. Use the questions on page 563 to identify any missing elements and fill them in.
If you have difficulty applying the reading strategy, work with a partner and take turns reading the story aloud. You might read one page at a time and stop to jot down information in your charts. Discuss with your partner anything you found difficult or confusing. Work together to interpret and analyze the text.
Review the information in your charts. Then, write a one-page reaction to the story as a whole. Be sure to identify the elements of the story that caused your reaction. Share your reaction paper with a small group. Then, discuss why you feel the way you do about the story.
