Before Reading

Visualize and Describe the Seasons

Which season is your favorite? Read the Image and Imagery information on page 579. Then, write a one-paragraph description of your favorite season using sensory details. Share your paragraph with a partner. Read your partner’s description of his or her favorite season. Close your eyes and visualize the description your partner wrote. Try to imagine all of the senses included in the description. Then, preview the selection by reading the footnotes and the Words for Everyday Use.

During Reading

Visualize the Poem’s Imagery

1. With a partner, read the poem aloud. You should read one stanza aloud, and your partner should read the other aloud. As your partner reads, close your eyes and visualize the images presented in the poem. Pay attention to sensory details that help you fully visualize the images.

2. Reread the poem with your partner, this time reading opposite stanzas from the first reading. Repeat the visualization process, using the descriptive details and sensory images to help you form your visualizations of the imagery.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have difficulty visualizing the imagery in the poem, use the Guided Reading Questions to focus on important images. Read the first Guided Reading Question, and then read the text until you encounter the answer. Jot down the answer in your notebook. Then, try to visualize the details Shakespeare included in the poem. Continue the process with the remainder of the Guided Reading Questions.

After Reading

Evaluate the Poem’s Imagery

After reading, write a paragraph evaluating the poem’s imagery. Which images are the most striking? Is Shakespeare successful in presenting the season? When you finish your paragraph, share it with a small group of students.
