Reader's Resource
  • Lawrence Ferlinghetti was a central figure in a movement called the Beat Generation. Beat writers, including Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, often wrote about personal experiences and tried to give these experiences an immediate and unpolished quality by avoiding use of formal and traditional forms and styles of writing. Beat poets often gave poetry readings in informal places like coffeehouses. Some people found the work of Beat writers shocking because the writers explored unconventional themes.
  • Lawrence Ferlinghetti is not only a poet, but owner of a very famous bookstore—the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, California. City Lights served as a place for Beat writers to meet, hold readings, and sell their work.
