about the author

Ten Bears (c.1792–1872) was a chief of the Yamperethka Comanche. He claimed to speak for all Comanche at the Medicine Lodge Council of 1867 where he delivered this speech. Ten Bears worked for peace, and shortly before his death, he advised his people to accept the ways of white people to end future fighting. His plea went unheeded. A trip to Washington, DC, late in his life weakened him, and he died within a year of his visit.
