Before Reading

Construct a KWL Chart

Read Prereading page 795 and preview the selection. Then, construct a three-column KWL chart with the headings: Know, Want to Learn, Learned. In the Know column, record what you already know about the rocks and the extinction of the dinosaurs. Then, discuss what the class would like to learn about the extinction of dinosaurs and how it is related to the two rocks. Jot down what you want to learn in the second column of your chart. You will be filling in the third column of your chart as they read and learn.

During Reading

Record Information in Your KWL Chart

1. Follow along in the text as your teacher reads the first five paragraphs aloud. Then, discuss as a class what you have learned so far. Record the information in the third column of your chart. If the information you have learned has piqued your interest or activated your prior knowledge, add questions or information in the first two columns of your chart.

2. Read the remainder of the selection on your own. Stop periodically to record information in your chart. Jot down anything you have learned, as well as anything new you want to learn.

Fix-Up Idea: Unlock Difficult Words

If you have difficulty understanding the text, unlock difficult words as you tackle the text. Before you begin, familiarize yourself with the Words for Everyday Use and the footnoted words. Then, if you encounter a difficult word as you read, use context clues and word parts to help you unlock meaning. If necessary, consult a dictionary.

After Reading

Summarize Your Learning

Review your KWL chart. Then, write a few paragraphs summarizing what you learned from the text. Explain what else you would like to know and write several questions that were not answered in the text. Share your summaries and questions with two or three other students.
