Before Reading

During Reading

Use the Text’s Organizational Features

1. Follow along in the text as your teacher reads aloud the first page. Identify the organization of the text. Then, discuss how this organization gives you clues to the content or meaning of the text. Record in your notebook a description of how the text is organized. Summarize the text.

2. Read the remainder of the selection on your own. Stop periodically to summarize the text. Identify how the organization helps you identify main points.

Fix-up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you find that you need additional help identifying the main points of the text, use the Guided Reading Questions. Read the first question on a page, and then read the text surrounding the question until you reach the answer. Jot down the answer and continue with the next question, repeating the process. When you finish the selection, review your answers to the questions and write a summary of the main points.

After Reading

Analyze the Text’s Organizational Features

In an essay, identify the text’s organizational features and describe why this is a good (or bad) way to organize the text. Explain how the organization helped or hindered your understanding. When finished, share and discuss your essay with a partner.
