Read the Prereading information on page 869. Then, draw a cluster chart with the center circle labeled Propaganda Techniques. In the first layer of outlying circles, list the techniques and descriptions of each. Discuss advertisements that use these techniques. Then, draw another layer of outlying circles. You will fill in examples of the techniques as you read the text.
1. Follow along in the text as your teacher reads the text with the blue background. Then, work through the section to record examples of each kind of propaganda in your chart. Discuss the purposes for including this propaganda in the advertisement.
2. Read the remainder of the text on your own. Continue filling in your Propaganda Techniques chart with examples from the text.
If you have difficulty identifying propaganda techniques, try working with a partner and reading the advertisement aloud. Consider how you react to each statement as your partner reads aloud the text. Then, identify how the company wants you to feel. What is the basis of this feeling? Answering this question will lead you to the kind of propaganda technique used. Continue applying the Fix-Up Idea for the remainder of the text.
When you finish reading and filling in your chart, evaluate the advertisement. Write a few paragraphs discussing the purpose and effectiveness, as well as the truth, of the advertisement. Explain whether it is believable and to which emotions it appeals. When finished, share your evaluation with a partner.
