Before Reading

Preview the Selection

Read the information on page 242. The story you are about to read is presented primarily in chronological order. However, it does contain a few flashbacks. Read the definition of flashback in the Handbook of Literary Terms. Construct a Sequence Chart, like the one on page 242, in your notebook. You will record the main events in your Sequence Chart as you read. As you fill in your Sequence Chart, keep in mind that you should leave spaces at the beginning to record flashback events.

During Reading

Complete Your Sequence Chart

1.Follow along in the text as your teacher reads aloud the first two sections of the story. With the class, identify the main events or important information presented in these sections. Which events are flashbacks? Record the main events and important information in sequential order in your Sequence Chart.

2. Read the remainder of the story on your own. Stop periodically to record the main events in your Sequence Chart. Be sure you record the events in sequential order.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have difficulty filling in your chart, try answering the Guided Reading Questions. These questions will help you identify key aspects of the story. Review your answers to the questions. If any pertain to key events in the story, add them to your chart.

After Reading

Summarize the Story

When you finish reading, review the information in your chart and make sure you have listed the main events in sequential order. Then, write a paragraph summarizing the main events of the story. Share your summary with a partner, and discuss any discrepancies. Make any necessary adjustments.
