The Way to Rainy Mountain is a nonfiction narrative taken from the memoir of the same name. The excerpt tells the story not only of the journey of Momadays Kiowa ancestors from the mountains of Yellowstone to the plains of Oklahoma, but also of his grandmothers life from childhood to old age. Momaday also describes his own journey to trace the steps of his Kiowa ancestors. Using poetic prose to describe the land the Kiowas have inhabited, the author evokes ancestral memories.
