Before Reading

Make an Organization Chart

Read about different kinds of text organization on page 55. Make a chart that shows the main methods of organization and a description of each. Keep this chart handy as you read.

During Reading

Identify a Text's Organization

1. Follow along in the text as your teacher reads the first paragraph. Notice that the speaker uses classification order, classifying what you would see during each season of the year. Follow along as your teacher reads the next two paragraphs. Identify the kind of organization that is used in these paragraphs and explain how you know.

2. Read the rest of the selection on your own. Keep a list of the different kinds of organization used in the selection.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Margin Notes

If you are having trouble determining the type of organization, go back and read the margin notes. They will help you identify some of the methods of organization used. In a pair/share group, discuss what words or phrases indicate that type of organization.

After Reading

Discuss a Text's Organization

With a group of two or three classmates, discuss the lists you created while reading. Where does Momaday use chronological order, classification order, and comparison and contrast order? How does the order relate to the purpose of each part of the essay?
