Before Reading

Think about What You Know

With a small group of classmates, talk about your Reader's Journal response. In your discussion, discuss different forms of government and what you know about them.

During Reading

Use What You Know

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first four paragraphs of the selection aloud. With your classmates, list what you know about the Iroquois form of government so far.

2. Continue reading on your own. Keep a list of things you learn about the Iroquois government. Pay special attention to the section that describes what a lord must be like.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus on Symbolism

If you are having trouble understanding parts of the selection, remember that some things are used symbolically. They represent things other than themselves. Consider symbols you know, such as a heart used to mean love or a dove used to mean peace. As you read, make a list of items you think may be used symbolically. Then go back and focus on those sections, trying to guess what they might represent.

After Reading

Share Your Connections

In small groups, share the list you made about the Iroquois form of government. Talk about how it is similar to or different from other governments you know. Write a brief description of the Iroquois government
