Before Reading

Understand Metaphor

Read about metaphor on page 92. In your notebook, create a metaphor chart like the one on page 92.

During Reading

Identify Metaphor as You Read

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first four lines of the poem. What metaphor does this section contain? Talk with a partner and add the metaphor to your chart.

2. Read the rest of the poem on your own. Each time you encounter a metaphor, determine its tenor and vehicle and add the metaphor to your chart.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you get stuck on the meaning, go back and try to answer the Guided Reading Questions. They will help you find important parts of the poem.

After Reading

Share Your Metaphor Chart

Share your metaphor chart with a partner. Look at your charts. What do the metaphors have in common? What can you learn about the Tewa from these metaphors?
