Chronological Order. Chronological order is the arrangement of details in order of their occurrence. It is the primary method of organization used in narrative writing. It is also common in historical nonfiction writing that describes events, such as this selection.
Point of View. Point of view is the vantage point from which a story, whether fiction or nonfiction, is told. A story may be told by one of the participants, who uses I to refer to himself or herself, or by an outsider who avoids the use of I. As you read, notice how the point of view changes as the selection is told.

In The General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles, John Smith presents a detailed and often exciting account of the events in the early years of the Virginia Colony from 1607, the year of its founding at Jamestown, to 1609, the year when Smith departed Virginia, never to return. The General History of Virginia . . . was completed in 1624, fifteen years after Smiths return to England. In this part of the account, Smith describes how he was saved from death by Pocahontas, the sixteen-year-old daughter of Chief Powhatan.
