Before Reading

Preview the Organization

Read about chronological order in Literary Tools. Read through the About the Author and About the Selection and notice the order used. With a small group of classmates, make a time line of events that occur in these sections.

During Reading

Make a Time Line

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs. Make notes about major events that occur in chronological order. Compare your list with the rest of the class.

2. Continue reading on your own, and add information to your time line as you read. Do not add every detail to your time line; instead, choose important or major events.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have trouble identifying events or putting them in order, go back and answer the Guided Reading Questions. These questions will help you focus on the main ideas or events in the selection.

After Reading

Share Your Time Lines

Share your time line with your group from the Before-Reading activity. Why do you think this order is used for histories? How did the organization help you understand the selection?
