
Stereotype. A stereotype is an uncritically accepted, fixed or conventional idea, particularly such an idea held about whole groups of people. Determine against what stereotype Douglass argues in this selection.
Tone. Tone is the emotional attitude toward the reader or toward the subject implied by a literary work. It may be expressed by word choice, imagery, and other techniques. As you read, determine the tone Douglass uses in his narrative.

Frederick Douglass had already established himself as an orator of exceptional ability and had given many speeches about his experience under slavery when he wrote his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Knowing that publication of the book would reveal his identity and make him a target for slave-catchers, he went to England until money could be raised to buy his freedom.
