I Will Fight No More Forever is the surrender speech of In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat, known to persons of European descent as Chief Joseph. In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat was chief of the Wal-lam-wat-kin band of the Chute-pa-lu. To the French who first encountered them, the Chute-pa-lu were known as the Nez Percé, a name that refers to the custom of piercing the nose for personal adornment. The speech was delivered on October 5, 1877, when Chief Joseph surrendered to General Nelson Miles. Chief Joseph was told that, after the surrender, his people would be returned to their homeland. That promise, like so many others made to Native Americans, was not kept.

How would you feel if you were forced to give up your home?
