Before Reading
Establish a Purpose
Read the Prereading information. Based on what you read, try to identify Anthony's purpose. Set up a cluster chart, and write Anthony's purpose for writing in the center circle.
During Reading
Read with the Purpose in Mind
1. Follow along in your text as your teacher reads the first two paragraphs of the speech aloud. As you read, look for the main points Anthony makes. Add these points to the cluster chart.
2. Continue reading on your own. Keep the purpose of this speech in mind as you read and continue to add points that support Anthony's argument to your cluster chart.
Fix-Up Idea: Read Aloud
Because this is a speech, it is meant to be heard. Hearing the selection may help you recognize Anthony's argument. With a partner, take turns reading aloud and listening to the selection. After you have both had a chance to listen to the selection, go back through the selection paragraph by paragraph with your partner, working to identify important ideas as you go.
After Reading
Share Effects of the Purpose
Compare your cluster chart with those of your classmates. Discuss whether Anthony successfully supports her argument.
