Irony. Irony is a difference between appearance and reality. Dramatic irony occurs when a situation appears one way to the reader of the story and another way to the characters. As you read, look for an example of dramatic irony.

Reversal. A reversal is a dramatic change in the direction of events in a drama or narrative, especially a change in the fortunes of the protagonist.

Kate Chopin began her career as a regional writer, like Sarah Orne Jewett. In her fiction, she carefully portrayed the landscape of the Gulf Islands and the people of Louisiana—the French Creoles of New Orleans and the rural Cajuns of Natchitoches. Besides being a regionalist, however, Kate Chopin was a pioneering feminist writer. “The Story of an Hour” is a fine example of Chopin’s feminist fiction.
