Before Reading
Make a Chart
A sequence chart can help you track the sequence of events and the reactions of the characters to these events. In your notebook, make a chart like the one shown on page 454 of your text.
During Reading
Fill in Your Chart as You Read
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the story. Write down the most important things that happen. Then write down Mrs. Mallard's reaction.
2. Continue reading on your own, and keep adding to your sequence chart as you read. The Guided Reading Questions may help you identify some of the key elements in the story.
Fix-Up Idea: Visualize
If you are having trouble following the story or identifying Mrs. Mallard's reactions, try visualizing as you read. As you read a sentence or paragraph, form a picture in your mind. Imagine yourself in Mrs. Mallard's place. What do you see, hear, feel, and do?
After Reading
Summarize Emotions
Compare your sequence chart with a partner. Examine the changes in Mrs. Mallard's emotional state throughout the story. Write a brief summary or graph the ups and downs of her emotions.
