Syntax and Inversion. Syntax is the pattern of arrangement of words in a statement. An inversion is a poetic technique in which the normal order of words in an utterance is altered. As you read, decide what the normal order of words in the first two lines of the poem would be without inversion.
Repetition. Repetition is a writers conscious reuse of a sound, word, phrase, sentence, or other element.

Seeking to catch the aliveness of the moment, Cummings manipulated typography, imagery, structure, diction, punctuation, grammar, syntax, rhyme, meter, and verse form.
Make a chart. On the left, write examples of repetition that play on the words open and close. On the right, write the meaning of these lines. One example has been done for you.
