Syntax and Inversion. Syntax is the pattern of arrangement of words in a statement. An inversion is a poetic technique in which the normal order of words in an utterance is altered. As you read, decide what the normal order of words in the first two lines of the poem would be without inversion.

Repetition. Repetition is a writer’s conscious reuse of a sound, word, phrase, sentence, or other element.

Reader's Resource
Following the prolific first decade of his work, Cummings published in 1931 the volume of verse w[viva] which included “somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond.” When Cummings wrote the selection, he was stretching to the limits his capacity for experimentation with poetic form. Seeking to catch the aliveness of the moment, Cummings manipulated typography, imagery, structure, diction, punctuation, grammar, syntax, rhyme, meter, and verse form.
