Before Reading

Make a Repetition Chart

Read about repetition on page 535. Make a chart like the one you see there.

During Reading

Complete the Chart as You Read

1. Read along as your teacher reads the first stanza aloud. Look for examples of things opening or closing and write them in the left-hand column of the chart. Think about the meaning of the references and write the meanings in the right-hand column.

2. Continue reading, and keep looking for images related to things opening or closing. Add them to your chart when you find them.

Fix-Up Idea: Reread

If you have trouble understanding the poem, try rereading the poem. Read each stanza and try to summarize the meaning. Use the Guided Reading Questions to help you focus on key sections of the poem. After you have Reread the poem, discuss the Respond to the Selection question with a partner.

After Reading

Summarize

Share your completed chart with a few of your classmates. If you had trouble finding the meanings for any of the examples of repetition, talk with your group to come up with a meaning.
