Before Reading

Begin to Picture What May Happen

Read the Prereading page and examine the art on page 540. Based on what you read and see, begin to imagine what may happen in the story.

During Reading

Create a Mind Movie

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the story. Begin to create a mind movie as you listen, and involve all of your senses in the mind movie. Make quick sketches that show what you see, hear, or feel.

2. Continue reading and making a mind movie. When you are finished with the poem, make quick sketches or write a brief summary to explain what you saw in your mind movie.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you are having trouble following events in the story, go back and reread. Stop each time you come to a Guided Reading Question. Read the question carefully. Then read the surrounding text and answer the question. Write a full sentence answering each question in your notebook.

After Reading

Share Your Mind Movie

With a few of your classmates, share your sketches or the summary of the mind movie you made. What events or images in the story were the most prominent or meaningful to you?
