Internal Monologue. An internal monologue presents the private sensations, thoughts, and emotions of a character. As you read, think about what the older waiter’s internal monologue reveals about his feelings about human existence.
Characterization and Dialogue. Characterization is the use of literary techniques to create a character. Dialogue is conversation involving two or more people or characters. As you read, determine which characteristics of the younger waiter are revealed through dialogue.

Between 1923 and 1933, Hemingway wrote all of his major short stories, including “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place,” which was published in the 1933 collection Winner Take Nothing. Five years later, The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories, which compiled three collections—In Our Time, Men Without Women, and Winner Take Nothing—established Hemingway as one of America’s most admired writers of short fiction. Written with Hemingway’s characteristic spare prose, “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” unfolds primarily through dialogue. In the selection, two waiters at a Spanish café discuss one of their regular clients, an elderly man who likes to sit late at night at a table on the café terrace. A careful listener, Hemingway vitalized the writing of dialogue by stripping verbal exchange to its essentials, producing the illusion of actual speech
