Before Reading

Make a Chart

Talk about your responses to the Reader's Journal with a few of your classmates. Then, make a three-column chart. Label the columns What the Mask Does, What the Person Wearing the Mask Does, and What the World Sees.

During Reading

Fill in Your Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads "We Wear the Mask." Listen for references to the mask and what the mask does.

2. Go back and read the poem on your own. Make notes in your chart about what the mask does, what the person wearing the mask does, and what the world sees.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus on Repetition

Work with a partner to find examples of repetition in the poem. Then do a think aloud about the repetition. Take turns questioning meaning, making guesses about meaning, and offering connections related to the repeated piece. Look at the words and lines around the repeated pieces. What can you learn from comparing the ideas surrounding the repeated words and phrases?

After Reading

Summarize What You Wrote

With a partner, compare your charts. Talk about the effect of wearing masks. What might wearing a mask represent?
