Before Reading
Begin to Make Mind Pictures
Think about a storm you have experienced. Make a sensory detail chart to answer the Reader's Journal question. Then talk about your responses with a partner.
During Reading
Create Mind Pictures
1. Listen as your teacher reads the poem aloud. Try to visualize the images in the poem. Use your experience with storms to help you.
2. Read the poem on your own. Write the poem on a piece of paper and sketch images that show the pictures in your head.
Fix-Up Idea: Refocus on Metaphor
Set up a metaphor chart like the one on the Prereading page. As you read, look for metaphors in the poem. What connection is Toomer making between flowers and a storm?
After Reading
Share Your Connections
Share your sketches with your partner from the Before-Reading activity. Talk about the similarities and differences between your images.
