Literary Tools
Slant Rhyme. A slant rhyme, half rhyme, near rhyme, or off rhyme is substitution of assonance or consonance for true rhyme. As you read, look for examples of slant rhyme.

Characterization. Characterization is the use of literary techniques to create a character. Writers use three major techniques to create characters: direct description, portrayal of characters’ behavior, and representations of characters’ internal states. How is Commander Lowell characterized in this poem?

Reader's Resource
Commander Lowell,” a critical portrait of the poet’s father, appeared in 1959 in his collection of poetry, Life Studies. Life Studies gives glimpses into the themes of Lowell’s childhood. The collection, with its “confessional” poems, had an enormous influence on the future of poetry in the United States.

Although best known for Life Studies, Lowell established his true greatness as an American poet in the astonishing variety of his work. He wrote both intricate and tightly patterned poems that incorporated traditional meter and rhyme, as well as autobiographical poetry structured in much looser forms and meters. According to his friend Peter Taylor, Lowell’s interest in personal development and history and politics were one and the same, a search for “oneness in himself and a oneness in the world.”
