Elegy. An elegy is a poem or verse that laments the dead. As you read, determine the feelings of the speaker for Jane, the subject of the poem.

Metaphor. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken or written about as if it were another. It invites the reader to make a comparison between the two things

Elegy for Jane,” which first appeared in Roethke’s poetry collection The Waking in 1953, is one of several elegies written by the poet. The use of natural imagery in the poem, especially that of birds, fish, and plants, is common in Roethke’s work.

As you read, make a chart. On the left, write the metaphor that Roethke uses. On the right, write what Jane and the thing being compared have in common. One example has been done for you.
