Reader's Resource
“The Magic Barrel” appeared in the short story collection of the same name, published in 1958. Containing influences of Yiddish folktales and Hasidic traditions, most of the stories in this collection depict the search for hope and meaning within the grim entrapment of poor urban settings. Scholars have noted that the stories in the collection also owe a debt to Hawthorne: like Hawthorne, Malamud combines “reality and the dream, the natural and supernatural.”
