Before Reading

Set Up a Chart

Read the Literary Tools section on page 808. Talk with a few classmates about the characteristics of a hero. Make some predictions about what Leo Finkle will be like. Then set up a cluster chart like the one on page 808.

During Reading

Complete the Chart

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first three paragraphs of the story aloud. As you listen, focus on the character of Leo Finkle. If you find characteristics that show him to be an antihero, add them to your cluster chart. Try to figure out his motivation.

2. Continue reading on your own. Keep focusing on Leo and add characteristics about him to your cluster chart as you read.

Fix-Up Idea: Refocus on Plot

Review the elements of plot in the Handbook of Literary Terms. As you read, complete a plot chart for the story.

After Reading

Share and Summarize Information

Share your cluster chart with your group from the Before-Reading activity. Discuss your overall impression of Leo Finkle.
