Before Reading

Think About What You Know

With a few of your classmates, discuss your responses to the Reader's Journal question. Talk about whether you thanked the person or recognized what they did.

During Reading

Use What You Know

1. Listen as your teacher reads the first stanza of the poem aloud. Write down what the speaker's father does and the speaker's reaction to what the father does.

2. Read the next two stanzas on your own. Continue writing down what the speaker's father does and the speaker's reaction.

Fix-Up Idea: Visualize

Close your eyes and listen as someone reads the poem aloud. Imagine you are in the scene described. Try to picture and feel each detail. How would you feel? Open your eyes and quickly summarize what you pictured.

After Reading

Share Your Connections

With your group from the Before-Reading activity, compare the ideas you wrote down while you read. Discuss the Respond to the Selection question. Talk about what you could do to recognize the person you wrote about in your Reader's Journal.
