Allusion. An allusion is a rhetorical technique in which reference is made to a person, event, object, or work from history or literature. Look for allusions as you read “House Guest.”

Tone. Tone is the emotional attitude toward the reader or toward the subject implied by a literary work.

As you read, make a cluster chart to determine the tone of the speaker’s comments toward the seamstress. In the first layer of circles, write a detail about the seamstress. In the next layer, write the speaker’s comment about this detail. One example has been done for you.
