Before Reading
Make a Cluster Chart
Read about tone on page 891. Make a cluster chart to use as you read. Write the word seamstress in the center circle. As your read, add details about the seamstress. Connect to those details the speaker's comments or attitudes toward the details. You can add another circle with your comments, too.
During Reading
Use a Cluster Chart to Gather Information
1. Listen as your teacher reads the first stanza. Write details and comments in your cluster chart.
2. Continue reading on your own. Add additional comments and details about the seamstress as you read.
Fix-Up Idea: Focus on Footnotes
Preview the footnotes in this selection. Read through each footnote to see the meaning of the target word or phrase. As you read, refer to the footnotes again, if necessary, or use what you remember from previewing the footnotes.
After Reading
Summarize What You Learned
With a partner, compare your cluster charts. How did you react to the seamstress? What would you do if she were your guest?
